PUNCHLINE "How is the  balikbayan box  like American Express to Filipinos? Because they never leave home without it"   DISCUSSION  One example of a funny Filipino culture in the story is the obsession with balikbayan boxes and the items that are packed inside them. The punchline "How is the balikbayan box like American Express to Filipinos? Because they never leave home without it" highlights this cultural phenomenon.  As a student, I would argue that this cultural obsession with balikbayan boxes and bringing home goods from abroad should not be removed entirely, as it serves as a way for Filipinos to connect with their homeland and share experiences with their loved ones. However, it is important to recognize the potential negative consequences, such as the excess baggage fees and the tragic story of the engineer who died in transit. It is also important to consider the environmental impact of the excessive use of cardboard boxes and the need for more sustainab...

Anecdote: Preludes by Daryll Delgado

A song that could relate to the situation of Nenita and her husband is "The Archer" by Taylor Swift from her album "Lover". The lyrics of the song describe the struggle of dealing with one's own insecurities and the fear of being vulnerable in a relationship. The line "All of my enemies started out friends" could relate to Nenita's situation, where her husband's mistress was once her friend and has now become an enemy by having an affair with her husband. The lyrics "Combat, I'm ready for combat / I say I don't want that, but what if I do?" could also reflect Nenita's inner turmoil, where she may not want to resort to poisoning her husband, but feels like she has no other choice in order to escape the pain and betrayal he has caused her. The chorus of the song, "I've been the archer / I've been the prey / Who could ever leave me, darling? / But who could stay?" could also relate to Nenita's situati...

Poetry: Desiderata

Image
I recently came across a poem called "Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann, and it really touched me. The poem talks about living a peaceful, simple, and kind life. When I read it, I felt a sense of calm and inspiration. The poem reminded me to slow down and find peace in the midst of a busy life. It also encouraged me to be patient and understanding with others, and to focus on the things that really matter in life. Overall, "Desiderata" has helped me to view the world and my place in it in a more positive and intentional way, and I am grateful to have discovered it.
